Hayon Studio
Paseo San Juan Bosco 55, 1-2 08017 Barcelona, Spain
Jaime Hayon set up Studio Hayon in Barcelona in 2000. As a teenager, he submerged himself in skateboard culture and graffiti art, which provided the foundation of the some of the whimsical imagery and concepts so evident in his work today.
With a background in industrial design, Jaime creates across a myriad of disciplines including furniture and lighting design; producing collections both in his own right and in collaboration with companies such as Moooi, Friz Handen, Swarovski and Baccarat. He also creates sculptures, ceramics, textiles and has even designed a wristwatch collection for Swiss brand Orolog.
In terms of retail, Hayon studio is probably best known for the store concepts which they designed in collaboration with Camper, which feature many of his furniture and lighting designs. With a pair of Camper’s by Jaime, he also ventured into product design, as he did with Lladró – designing both their New York store and a porcelain collection.
One of his most recent retail concepts was designed for diamond jeweller Nirav Modi, with a concept for their New York store. The design has a distinctly feminine feel, with showcases of soft peach with pale floral feature decorations, which enhance the beauty of the jewels. The theme continues throughout and can be seen in the organic forms and curves of the product displays, the suspended display cabinet, chairs and architecture of the store front.
In contrast Hotel Barcelò Torre de Madrid is filled with wit and humour, which includes a huge striped bear tipping his hat welcoming visitors, a surreal nod to Madrid’s coat of arms, likewise imagery commissioned from the photographers Klunderbie provides a modern interpretation of classic Spanish iconography. Each feature is more than functional, it is there to be enjoyed, from the playful face shapes of the window frames to the lighting above the reception, every corner is thoughtfully conceived. The result is a visual design feast.
Other projects include a market stall for gourmet food trader Uno, restaurants for Le Sergeant Recruteur in Paris and La Terrazzo de Casino in Madrid and the Faberge Salon in Geneva.
Whether creating artefacts or interiors there is a fluidity in the form of Hayons designs. Often mixing the traditions of fine crafting with contemporary twists, details or materials, whilst blurring the lines between art, decoration and design, Hayon is a truly versatile designer who delights and surprises with every project, which is further endorsed by the number of international ‘Best Designer’ awards that he has been presented with.
