On a corner of Liverpool’s vibrant Slater Street, the Outsiders concept store serves up outdoor apparel and gear in a ‘hippie modernist’ setting inspired by the outdoorsy lifestyles of Japan and America’s Pacific Northwest. With brands including the North Face, Patagonia, Fjallraven and Polar, it targets image-conscious city dwellers wanting to connect with nature.

WDC Creative delivers a ‘hippie modernist’ outdoor apparel experience for image-conscious urbanites.

‘Function meets style’ is the underpinning philosophy, and this is extended into the store’s design. Collaboratively conceived by WDC Creative, Quantum4 and the Outsiders Store team, the space gives a nod to the Colorado-based 70s artists’ community Drop City. Pegboard, timber sheeting and DIY wooden displays use modern materials to give an updated twist on the hand-hewn hippie aesthetic. Tinted metal fastenings and cheery greenery add a pop of colour while also speaking to the brand’s outdoorsy leanings.

In keeping with the nature-loving ethos of the brands it stocks, the overall vibe is clean and honest, making use of eco-friendly materials and the space’s existing infrastructure wherever possible. Its flexible, modular design allows it to be completely reshaped to accommodate new merchandise – and eventually recycled.

Strategically positioned in a style-conscious city of urbanites with geographic proximity to the coast and the great outdoors, the store aims to meet the needs of campers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
