China’s love for playful, experimental retail design is perfectly summed up by the Neobio Kids’ Restaurant in Shanghai. Attached to a kid-friendly theme park combining a book store, party zone, play and climbing area, the newly opened restaurant adds some additional fairytale verve.

The 500 square metre restaurant aims to occupy kids before and after their meal, giving parents time to relax as kids play. Strikingly designed to resemble a fairytale castle with brightly patterned hot air balloons floating overhead, the restaurant offers multiple play areas connected by transparent tunnels.

Neobio Kids’ Restaurant exemplifies retail as a place to be, not just a place to buy.

Ball, sand and toy pits keep kids entertained while parents dine nearby in pastel-hued sections designed to appeal to adults as much as to kids. Chevron-patterned floors and contemporary furniture lend an imaginative tone, but pleasing colour choices ensure that the space doesn’t overwhelm.

The layout of the restaurant makes it easy for parents to keep an eye on their children: tables are positioned around open play areas for visibility, and parents can walk beneath crawlways or monitor their child’s progress through the transparent tubes. This provides gentle reassurance.

The space artfully combines playful, conceptual retail design with food and hospitality for a destination that appeals to the whole family. With more to do than simply shop, it encourages customers to visit often and stay longer.
